Phoenix, Ariz., May 6, 2009. A west valley auto repair facility recently received "Green Shop" designation from AAA Arizona for finding reasonable and cost-effective ways to protect the environment and conserve resources. The addition of Mike's Sun City Union brings the total number of AAA Green Shops across the state to 21, with several more awaiting reviews and inspections.
"We are honored to add Mike's Sun City Union to our growing list of Green Shops, which are known for taking great pride in their appearance, performance and environmental impact," said Phil Farenga, coordinator of the Arizona Green Business Program for AAA Arizona. "These shops are taking the opportunity to lead other businesses down the road to becoming 'green,' by setting an example in pollution prevention and conservation for other industries to follow."
Mike's Sun City Union, a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility and four-time winner of the auto club's prestigious Top Shop award, has been operating in the northwest Valley since 1973 and has been located at 10120 W. Bell Road in Sun City since 1988.
"We want to operate in a way that allows us to be around longer without causing disruption to the environment and our future," said Scott Repman, manager of Mike's Sun City Union. "Our customers, employees and the surrounding community will all benefit from our efforts to lessen our environmental impact."
As the certifying authority for the Arizona Green Business program, AAA Arizona inspects auto repair facilities that have applied for certification. To achieve this designation, facilities must demonstrate that they are reducing hazardous waste through the use of specialized equipment and cleaning methods. In addition, they must conserve natural resources by reusing supplies and recycling materials whenever possible.
Green Shops also create a healthier workplace by following environmentally sound disposal and cleaning techniques. For example, by using water-based cleaning systems instead of chemical solvents, facilities protect their employees from harmful chemicals, generate less pollution and save money.
