Tucson Business Moves Closer to Achieving “Green” Goal

Tucson, Ariz., Sept. 22, 2009. Three auto repair facilities in Tucson recently received Green Shop designation from AAA Arizona for finding reasonable and cost-effective ways to protect the environment and conserve resources. The addition of BRAKEmax #1, BRAKEmax #6 and BRAKEmax #8 brings the total number of AAA Green Shops in Tucson to 17 and across the state to 25, with several more awaiting reviews and inspections.

“The unique thing about these businesses is that they are voluntarily taking steps to improve our environment — a concept not always associated with the auto repair industry,” said Don Nunnari, AAA Arizona vice president of membership products and services. “These shops take pride in their appearance, performance and environmental impact. For these reasons, we think it’s important to recognize them.”

BRAKEmax is currently in the process of achieving Green Shop certification for all 12 of their AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities. With the addition of the following locations, BRAKEmax only has four more shops to go to achieve this goal.

The following three shops recently earned Green Shop designation:

• BRAKEmax #1, 4545 N. 1st Avenue
• BRAKEmax #6, 2756 S. Kolb Road
• BRAKEmax #8, 3245 N. Swan Road

“We made several improvements in order to meet the green guidelines,” said David Allen, service manager of BRAKEmax #1. “We have new oil filters, spill kits, and tubs for leaky bulk oil, among many other changes. It’s important for us to meet these requirements because, not only is it better for the environment, but it can help build confidence in our customers. They know they are choosing a facility that is top-notch and environmentally-friendly.”

As the certifying authority for the Arizona Green Business program, AAA Arizona inspects auto repair facilities that have applied for certification. To achieve this designation, facilities must demonstrate that they are reducing hazardous waste through the use of specialized equipment and cleaning methods.

Green Shops also create a healthier workplace by following environmentally sound disposal and cleaning techniques. For example, by using water-based cleaning systems instead of chemical solvents, facilities protect their employees from harmful chemicals, generate less pollution and save money.
